For this week's blog, I'd like you write 1-2 paragraphs about Giving Names in your country!
- What is the custom or tradition of giving names in your country? Think about who usually names babies, what names are often given, as well as when and how names are given and why naming babies is important (or not).
- Who named you, and what does your name mean (in English and in your language)?
- What are some customary names for boys and girls? What are some unusual names for boys and girls?
- Does your country have nicknames? If so, why? What does your nickname mean (in English and in your language), and why were you given a nickname?
- Have names changed in your country over time? Were some names more popular 100 years ago than today? What names are the most popular in your country today?
- What will you name (or have you already named) your children and why?
- If you could give yourself a new different name, what would it be and why?
:) Heather
Names, names, names ... I think every parents have a really important task when they face the decision on what name give to their child. The name is an important issue, it reflect the hope the parents have on the
ReplyDeletenewborn, and they have to be careful not to give to their child a strange or unusual first name.
In my country (Italy) we used to give to the newborn the name of one of his grandparents. Now, this tradition is practically gone, and we could see a lot of name completely made up or from a foreign language. What I said it's without consider the new trend of giving strange name to the child, such as : Chanel or Nathan Hawk, two names of celebrities' children.
My name is Daniele, a name my parents chose for me after a period of reflection. The reason why they gave me this name is because my father's name and my brother's name starts with da-. Daniele is a hebrew masculine names that means "God is my judge", and it comes from Daniy'el. However, like the old tradition of Italy, I've a second name too. My second name is Giorgio and it was the name of my mother's father. Giorgio is a name from greek and it means earth-worker. I wouldn't change my name with another. Overall, I like it, and I think it's some sort of message my parents wants to give me. I like to think about the name we have like a message in a bottle.
Talking about something different, the most common name in my country is according to a statistic by Istat is Francesco, male, and Giulia, female. Unlike other countries we don't use nicknames.
Regarding the names I'll like to give to my children, it's a very tough question. I'm not sure about that, but I'll probably spend a lot of time thinking about it with my future wife.
I remember that you can view my post with images and links at : http://matrixarray.blogspot.com/2011/07/giving-names.html

ReplyDeleteWell… In my country, people always give baby a good name to them. When you born in this country, your name for your fortune-teller. Because my grandfather thought the baby’s name is important in my future. For example, my name is Hsiao Han-Yuan. My fortune-teller gave my parents a red book that has many different names. No matter which name you choose, you will have a different life in your future. Each of names has different means and future, so my Chinese name means I am a good teller to some people. Now, modern people are lazy to write their name when they sign so now people just named for babies use two words to them. It makes people write down their name easily and easy to remember people’s name. In Taiwan, some of name is popular, like shu-jiun and ya-ting. But in the school, students called it old fashion name. Because when you at airport, you call Shu-Jiun maybe one third people will say hello together.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know I will give my children theirs name, but I think I probably use the old manner named for my children.

ReplyDeleteReally, all depends on family. Some families giving names because of their meanings, but name for me chose my mother. She said: 'Anna is the only name that I like' and that's it. My name means bliss/God's mercy/pulchritude, but I think that it's not important) In Russia my name is popular, but also very popular for girls Elena, Kate (Katerina), Anastasia and for boys Ivan, Aleksandr, Aleksey, Andrey, Dmitriy :) Earlier I thought that if I had unusual name it would be cooler, but now I'm ok with mine. Unusual names... for girls it is Juliana, Svetlana, Avdotia, Angelika (but I'm not sure that they initially russian and the third one is very old), for boys maybe Grigoriy, Innokentiy, but for me they are really stupid)
ReplyDeleteNicknames are very popular in my country. It could be shorter forms of surnames or something that describes appearance, or maybe after funny action. On summer my hair become lighter because of sun and in another time of year they're darker and maybe brighter, but in russia everybody last ~four years call me 'red-haired'/'ginger'. Really, I never had saturated red hair, but my friends think in another way. Some people that communicate with me for years sometimes ask me 'Oh, but what is your name?' and they feel shock when they heard 'Anna' because they very used to 'ginger'. Few times I changed my color in brown, in violet, in dark-red but everybody continue to call me 'ginger'.
If my child will be male I'm sure that the name for him will be Konstantin in memory of my best-friend. If girl.. I like names like Julia, Evgenia, Albina,.. but I really don't know yet) but I'm sure that I will give name to girl not for meaning of it, only for sounding. But problems for me that there are many names that really I like (Anastasia, for example) but I have bad associations with it) maybe my errr husband will help me :\
In Saudi Arabia naming new born baby vary from area to area and from socila group to another. This might be the case to some extend in the Arab world which vary as well from country to another . As in Saudi Arabia Arab countries vary in naming practice from on area to another.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to the Saudi case some naming is differ from one place to another. For instance in the Westren province the names tend to be similar to those in Egept.Furthermore some family names has some special sound among people especially the house fo prophet Mohammed peace opun him. However in the Eastren province names tends to be between the central area and the Gulf area. In some part of this area some religous minorty tends to have some islamic names that reflects their believs. Still to say that the central part takes the root of naming it,s new born babies from the the Nomadic side of the society, since both of them has the same names with some diffrents. Nomads pepole tends to have some queer and odd names which makes the goverment reject it eventually when it comes for civil registration.
In any event the process of naming new borns is the duty and decsion of the parent and in some cases as the one mentioned above the final say will be to the new borns registrar. Having saying it worth mentioning that the most popular names for girls is "Mona" and for boys "Mohammed". My mother name is Norah which a popular name in the central part and I name my younger daughter Norah as well after my mother's name. My father gave me me name Saleh because he saw a man in his dream calling for that name.

Hello Everybody. It's Me Gui.
ReplyDeleteName is a important thing in life. Some people says that names make what kind of person you are.
My Name is Guilherme, is a portuguese translation from Willian. Yeap, my name in English is Willian. One curios fact. I born in the same day of Price Willian of England, and I have the same name, but it is a coincidence only.
Who gave me this name was my Mother. She and my father has a deal: If was a girl my father gave the name, if was a boy this is was my Mother task.
The usual Brazilians names is Joao, Jose, Fernando, Pedro, Rafael, Carlos, for men. For women to most usual is Maria, Fernanda, Cristina, Ana, Mariana, and Carolina.
Basically parents choose the baby names for many reasons. Honor a Family member, Religious, Name that they simple like, and sometimes they recovery at numerology.
My nick name in Brazil is Chapinha, in english Flat Iron. Yes, like that object that women use at hairs to make then smooth. Who nicknamed me is my friend Fernando when I had long hair. My hair is too smooth and everybody kidding me about that. Everybody said that I passed Flat Iron in my hair to became smooth. But isn't true, because my hair is smooth originally.
The names of people in my Country changes every moments, like all countries. Some name is consider old names, and every parents doesn't want name your children with old names.
If I would have children, something that I Think will be impossible in my life, because even girlfriend i have, I would name Augusto if is a boy or Pamela if is a girl. I choose this name because i like this name. Particulary Augusto, because if I had the opportunity to choose a name for me, I probably choose this One.
Ok Guys, see you on the Class.
Hugs for your Friend... Willian... hahahahahaha
Hi, I'm Erica. In my country, my chinese name is chang chieh-ting. Extually, I have changed my name while I was ten years old. Chang yuan-ting is my name before I was ten years old. This name was named by my mother. In chinese, it means you can safety and pretty forever. My mom also thinks a name will influence our personality and destiny. However, when I was a elementary school student, I was very silence and introvert. I am always cried. So, my mom dicided to
ReplyDeletechange my name. She hopes I can become more brave and independent. Therrefore, she went to find a fortune-teller and chose my new
name. Chang chieh-ting means you will have a better life and fate.
In Taiwan, the customary names for boys usually are zhi-hao or jun-jie; the customary names for girls are ya-ting. Those are most customary name in Taiwan. So, we usually said it is a market name. I have some classmates in Taiwan, they usually have this name. Then,if I have a baby, I will give him or her a special name. He must need to different to each other. Also, i will go to asked a teller. And choose a unique name for him.
I hope he can have a good personality and lucky life.
Hannah- Our names are both came from the fortune-teller. Also, it will influencs our future. Even though change our personality. Ya-ting is really a customary names in Taiwan. And, you say "you call Shu-Jiun maybe one third people will say hello together." is very interesting!!!:)
ReplyDeleteGui- In our country, we also think that a name is important. It can impact on your life. Also, It's a cool dicision that if you are a girl your father; if you are a boy was your mother's task.
To Hannah or Erica : Do you use nicknames in Taiwan ? If yes, how do you choose that?
ReplyDeleteTo Erica : What name would you give to yourself?
To Saleh : What does your name mean?
To Gui : the story of you nickname is very funny, I can't think about you with long hair. It's so strange ...
To Ana : Do you have any newborn with english name in Russia?
To Daniele: In Taiwan, we often use nickname to closely friends or family. For example: my friend called monkey, because her personality always energetic and out-going. In the modern life, my friend and I use the nickname to call each other. I don’t like someone to call me whole name. On the other hand, some people use the bad words to call somebody’s name. We can use her or his name and use assonance to call. Maybe when you hear the nickname, you will feel angry very much.
ReplyDeleteHi every body,
ReplyDeleteIn Saudi Arabia, especially in my family, the parents choose their baby’s name. The mother of the baby often chooses her/his name because she suffers the pain of birth. As the tradition, the parents choose their baby name before he/she delivers. In fact, Mohammad is the common name for the boys in Saudi Arabia, and Norah is the common name for the girls. When the baby comes, their parents name her/him as what they chose before. Then, the baby’s father takes him, and says near the baby’s right ear, “God is Great, God is great, God is great, God is great. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to the prayer, come to Prayer. Come to the Success, come to Success. Allah is great, Allah is great. There is no God but Allah. During the first week it’s better to make an amulet for this baby during the first week by slaughtering a sheep if the baby is a girl or two cheeps if the baby is boy, and giving the meat to the people and relatives. In my opinion, I think the name is very important because it is my identity, and in my country everyone takes his/her name as the first name. Then, he/she takes his father’s name as the second part of his name. After that he/she takes his/her grandfather’s name, as the middle of his/her name. And the family name comes at the end of his/her name.
In my situation, in fact, my mother chose my name, and my father agreed her opinion. My name, Nada, means in ندى " " and means in English, "dew. " And it has a stupid meaning in Spanish “ nothing” -_- .
In addition, my country has a lot of nicknames which are the name of the parents’ oldest son or daughter. For example, my father has a nickname “ Amal’s father” which means the father of his oldest daughter “ Amal” , my mother has a nickname “ Amal’s mother” which means the mother of “Amal” , and my father in law has a nickname “ Abdullah’s father”.
If I had a daughter, I would name her “ Rahaf” because my sister had a dream and she wanted that name for my daughter , and Rahaf means “ someone who is kind and soft.”
If I had a son, I would name him “Ibrahim” because my husband wants this name which the name of my father and my father in law. : )
In Saudi Arabia, the names have changed over time, and there were many names more common 100 years ago than today, such as Hosah, Hellah,Rogaiah, and Lolwah. But today, we have different names, such as Nada ; ) and Rahaf ; ) .
In fact,Really I like my name and I don’t want to change it.
thanks

ReplyDeleteNada, hi) you don't love donkeys? :D
ReplyDeleteYes, it's ok) very few people in my country interested in meanings of names) more important how name sounds, or in honor of whom it gaves
Could you tell me about yourself, how your name change your life, what effects of your life of having this name?
Sorry me, it is very strange for me to make meanings of names important
Hi, everyone :D
ReplyDeleteIn Japan, parents usually name their babies. When babies are born, parents must decide the name within two weeks because of the law. We have to register the birth and name of the baby at city hall within two weeks. Japanese people think naming babies is very important because we believe that names have power. When parent think babies' name, they notice sound, stroke count (kanji), and meaning of kanji. Kanji is one of our writing character, like this 漢字.
In Japan, common names for male are Daiki(大輝), Yuuki(勇気), Shouta(翔太) and etc. Daiki(大輝) means big sparkle. Yuuki(勇気) means brave life energy. Common names for female are Ai(愛), Yui(優維), Saki(早紀) and etc. Ai(愛) means love. Yui(優維) means sustentation of kind. When the parents want babies to be something, they name their babies with wish.
My mother named my name, Yunako(夢七子). Yu(夢) means dream. Na(七) means seven. Ko(子) has some meaning such as child, princess, and from start to finish. My meaning of Ko(子) is last one "from start to finish." My mom wants me to always have a lot of dreams until die :D I like my name★
Thank you
Yuna

ReplyDeleteHi Anna,
ReplyDelete^_*
Perhaps names are the most important factors that affect our characters , our dealings with others ,and how they treat us.
It's the title of our lives !
and we are the force that makes the relationship with our names ...
there are some people deal with their name as a superficial relationship, do not get the inside of their heart, and do not introduce it to deal with them or deep inside like a postal address for our lives ..
On the other hand there are those who believe in it. They are affected by each part of their names: history, means, who was named with it before or after, and the extent of our faith that name affects our personality.
Ultimately, the responsibility of choosing a name is first and foremost the responsibility of the parent.
They have to choose a name which has a beautiful meaning without resorting to the ugly or meaningless meaning that makes their son shamed, ridiculed, or sad in the future.
In my opinion, my name has an impact in my life.
it indicates to the dew, which refers to the thing that is very pure and free from any impurities. Also, my name refers to the rain, favor, good, and wealth.
thanks
Nada, in what we believe - that is truth)
ReplyDeletethank you very much for good describing :)
Hello, how's going guys?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that I wrote this lately, especially Yuna! haha
This is a very interesting topic. I can't tell everything about "name" because it's profound.
As you know, there are three types of letter in Japan, so it's difficult to explain about name, but I'll try to do my best.
1, Parents usually name their child and spend much time to choose the best name. When we name babies, we think about the meaning of Kanji, the stroke count of each letter and the total amount of letters, what the famous letter at that time is and so on.
2, My parents named me, especially my dad. They told me the day when they named me.They had argument because my mam want to name me different name.
My name means "to be kind person." and "never forget about happiness, respect or important thing to me." These are my parent's hope rather than meaning of name, so name is treasure for me.
3,In the past, "Taro(太郎)", "Ichiro(一郎)","Jiro(二郎,次郎) and "Saburo(三郎)" were common name for boys. These mean "the child who is first child for the family","the child who is second child for the family", like this.
For girls, their name included "ko(子)" such as "Sachiko(幸子)" or "Hanako(花子)". It was common, of course, there are still some girl whose name is "OOko(○○子)". It was also common that one of child's name's letter was taken from his parent's letter, for example, "Kensuke(健介)" is father's name, and "Kenta(健太)" is his child's name. In fact, how to name to child is very interesting in Japan, so you want to know more, please ask me !=)
4,Most of neckname come from the real name. It's picked up from full name. My necknames are "Yuu", "Yuntaro", "Ue" and "Uesu".These are from my full name "Yuuki Uesugi". "taro" is kind of Miss. In general, we have neckname to call us easily.
5, No, when we change name is the time when we get marrige or divorce, but even this time we change just last name.
6, Yes, I do. I want to name to my child "Sora(大空)" or "Kuu(空)".I want include this letter (空) because it means "the sky", and I like sky.
7, I don't want to change my name because I love my name, and as I said, it's my parent's hope. I very apprciate for my parents to name me beautiful name.
Thank you =)
Hi, Erica=)

ReplyDeleteI was surprised when I asked some Saudi to their full name. They have really long name. They told me that they have father name, grand father name, grand grand father name and more. Is that true? Do you have long name? In Japan, people cannot have their father/mother name. We cannot have our parents name.
