Blog 5: Fable, Folktale, Legend, Fairy Tale or Myth

For Blog #5, I would like you to tell me a story (fable, folktale, legend, fairytale or myth) from your culture, using your own words. Please tell me if (and how) the story has affected children or adults in your country; Does the story teach children important cultural or moral values? If so, what does it teach? In addition, please use quoted speech in your story!

*It is written in Wikipedia that a "fable is a succinct fictional story, in prose or verse, that features animals, mythical creatures, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature which are anthropomorphized (given humanmoral lesson (a "moral"), which may at the end be expressed explicitly in a pithy maxim" and that American Folklore "covers the same broad categories as the folklore of other nations. It encompasses myths, jokes, riddles, legends, cautionary tales, and many other forms of storytelling."

I can't wait to read your interesting stories!

  1. Hi, this is my story :D

Long time ago, there were a man and his wife. They were the happiest people in the world, but their happiness didn’t be completed because they didn’t have a baby. Once day the door was knocked and the wife ran quickly to look at the visitor. When she opened the door, he saw an old woman .she said,” who are you?” the old woman replied, “I am poor and I want some money from you .Please give me anything that you can.” Then the old woman asked the wife if she had a baby, and the wife said that she hadn’t a baby. The old woman said,” take these, three dates, and eat a date every day. I promise you that the treatment is in one of these dates.” Later, her husband came bake from the farm, and he found his wife was cooking the lunch. He saw the dates and ate them!! “Did you eat the dates?” she said, and he replied “Yes!!” She didn’t feel angry and just said,” That is ok.”
After few weeks, his leg became bigger than before, and it was swollen!! They realized that there was a baby in his leg. The man became angry , and he said that he wanted to throw this baby a way, but his wife said that she could keep this baby and take care of her/him. The man did what he wanted, so he hurt his leg, took the little beautiful girl, and carried her to the desert because he want to leave her in the desert, but when he started to keep her on the sands, he observed that there was a well, so he decided to keep her near the well because she might be needed drinking. After that, a falcon came to the well and saw the beautiful girl. He decided to get this girl and take care of her. He took her to the top of a palm, as their new home. Later, the girl became adult and more beautiful, and she went to the well every day to drink. Once day a horseman saw her near the well, and he admired her because of her beauty, and they felt in love with each other. Then they got married, but the horseman’s mother didn’t like her. After few weeks, when horseman went to his work, his mother took his wife and left her in the desert, so the beautiful wife whose name was “ Mosa” couldn’t come bake to her home, and she lost the address. When her husband came bake to their home, he didn’t find “Mosa”, so he asked his mother where “mosa” was. She said that “Mosa” died .Also, she showed him unreal grave, and said, “This is Mosa’s grave.” He felt sad and unconscious because he loved her. While “Mosa” was crying at the desert, the falcon saw her and said, “Why are you here?” “My mother in law didn’t like me, and she banished me,” she answered. The falcon asked her that what she wanted. She replied that she wanted a huge house. Then, he built a mansion for her.
Once day, the horseman said to his servant, “What a huge mansion is this? And for who?” he sent his servant to the mansion to bring some grape. When a servant went to the mansion, he said to “ Mosa”, “ Who are you ? My leader wants to know.” She said, “I’m heh . I’m heh . I’ am a farmer’s daughter. my father was pregnant , and I was left. Please, Mr.Scissors , cut the servant’s Tongue.” The servant went to the leader who was the horseman and said, “ thathathathatha,” so the leader couldn’t understand. Then he sent the other servant. The servant went to her and said again, “Who are you? My leader wants to know.” She said, “I’m heh . I’m heh . I’ am a farmer’s daughter. My father was pregnant, and I was left. Please, Mr.Scissors , cut the servant’s Tongue.” The servant went to the horseman and said, “ thathathathatha,” so the leader couldn’t understand. At the third time, the horseman decided to go by himself. He asked “Mosa” that who she was. She said, ““I’m heh. I’m heh. I’ am a farmer’s daughter. my father was pregnant , and I was left. Please, Mr.Scissors , cut his scarf.” Then he realized that she was his wife. He told her about everything and she did that too. She said, “ Let’s forgive your mother for her bad behaviour .” And they felt happy again with their new children.

    :D

  3. Algailah Humarat :The Noon Donkey

In Naged the Central area of the Arabian Penensulla before the foundation of the Saudi state, the land was full with fear , hunger and in top of that leitracy . This unpleasent triangle one would prescibe flurished the ground for all sort of legends and pupular proverbs to be widly recieved, hence become vital parts of the norms in those days. Therefore it is apperantelly obvious to recognize reasons behind this pupular legend."The noon Donkey". As described, the noon Donkey phrase is consisting of two words , Algailah which means the noon time and the world Humarat referes to the Donkey animal . Still to say that this phrase has been described in details by one writer as such; "Donkey Alqaalh or donkey Alqaalh and meaning of a donkey at noon, is a type of jinn appeared in Gulf societies, which are very similar Balgol and Ogress who have a human head and legs of a donkey and the body of a human and is said to be a monster scary eating the young boys who go out at noon"
However one of the most affected genders by fears as a result of unsecurity were childrens and womens. In those days noon times were hot and the pepole usually relax and go to sleep which leave the door open for childern to play in outdoors. Not only that but because in that time slavery was not abanded or even more not prohibited although the relgion was against it in all means. Therefore it was normal practice to kidnape and capture children and sell them to another merchindize whic in his turne sell him to another one who might be located elsware in another country. In this dark ages of slavery the most dangour man can face lossing his human degnity in terms of lossing his identity.
In addiion to children womens was subjected strongly for the same fear of the Noon Donkey . I this Najde woman story who was married to one of the soldiers Palace Musmak reported by the same author ."knocked on the woman's door of her home while her husband away , the palace early in the morning to go with her to the eye, for rain, and she agreed the woman behind her door to go with her, while walking in the road a girl soldier heard, a voice from under the feet of other women, where she saw the foot of the other women to be of a donkey !. Thereafter the solider's wife turned to the other woman claimed she forgot something home. She went back to her house and closed the door well where the other women went back to the woman's home and took a knock on the well closed door strongly ! Then the solider's women told her husband who did not believe her nor even her relatives. One day after a month the solider came back the soldier came back to his house where he saw the blood extended outside the home until the living room, tell people they went Aitbon blood and found the bones of his wife in her clothes". Then came hundreds of similar events, and stories that was one of these which stimulated people to warn their children of what they called a "donkey Alqaalh."!!
As one might conclude from reading this story of this popular proverbs in i's historical and social context that there are motivated factors that would lead to these legends apart of which is the social sosioecnomic context of the society.

  4. Hi,everyone =)
    How's your weekend?

I'm gonna tell you a Japanese old story whose title is "The battle between a monkey and a crab."

One day, there are a monkey and a crab in the mountain. When they took a walk together, a crab found a rice ball and said "I found something good, I found something good=)" A monkey felt he also wanted to find something good, and he found a seed of persimmon. He said to a crab "Shall we change rice ball and this?" A crab rejected. A monkey tried to persuade to change, but a crab didn't accept. Finally, a monkey said to a crab "A rice ball will disappear if you eat it, but a seed of persimmon will grow up and fruit, so you can eat a lot of persimmons for a long time." although he didn't think so. Then, he stole a rice ball and ate it. He threw a seed of persimmon to a crab and went back his house. A crab was obliged to take a seed to his house,,after he had came back, he buried a seed in his yard and took care carefully with singing. "Please grow up earlier, if you don't do that, I'll cut your bud by my claw." He repeated this song many times. As soon as he buried, it grew up and fruited. Nevertheless, it fruited many persimmons, he couldn't get these because he couldn't climb up the tree..He felt very sad and was thinking how he get persimmons. At that time, a monkey came to him and said "If you give a persimmon, I take persimmons for you." A crab answered "You can take any numbers of persimmons you want, so please pass me persimmons." However, a monkey did just eat without passing to a crab. So, a crab asked him to take persimmons for me. A monkey hit many blue persimmons to a crab and ran away.
The next day, a crab couldn't get up as his body hurt because of bruises. A bee came to a crab and asked what happened to you. A crab talked everything. A bee was so angry and gathered his friends to attack a monkey. They hide in a monkey's house after he went somewhere to get some foods. When he came beck, they attacked him hard, and he run away and never come back.

I think this story teaches children that a life doesn't go good way for them every time, and they should care about others. It also shows that if you always care about others, they help you when you need help.

    Thank you =)

That life needs mercy and forgiveness. You remind me
However with the fact that "humen being" word in English stands for "Ensan" which is derived from forget or forgiveness.

  8. Hi, everyone!
I will tell you "Hanasaka Jiisan (flower old man?)"

Long long ago, there lived a kind old man and his wife in a mountain hamlet. They had a puppy. The kind man and his wife loved him. The dog's name is Shiro.
One day, he went up to a mountain with Shiro. Suddenly Shiro barked. "Dig here, dig here, bow-wow," cried the Shiro. "Is there anything here? OK, I'll dig here," said kind man. "Oh my God! I found a lot of gold coins. Thank you, Shiro. What a wonderful dog you are!"
However, It was the mean old man lived in next house. He wanted the gold coins too. He borrowed Shiro and took him in a mountain and made him bark.
    A puppy said, "Dig, here."
"Ok, I dig here, and I'll find gold coins and I'll be a rich man," said the mean man. "Ok, I found a box. Snakes in the box! I kill you, Shiro!" Shiro was killed by the mean man.
The kind old man felt very sad for Shiro and made a grave for him in the garden. Soon a strange thing happened. A great tree grew up from the grave and a strange voice was heard from somewhere. "Make a mortar of this tree," said the voice. It was Shiro’s voice! So he cut down the tree and made a mortar.
When he put rice into it, a strange thing happened again. The rice changed into the gold coins.
The mean old man heard that happen and, he and his wife stole the mortar and put rice into it, but nothing happened. They were really angry, and they burnt it.
The kind old man and his wife were very disappointed to see the ash and came home with it. However, This ash could make cherry trees flower. One day he was invited to the house of lord's. When he threw ash around withered cherry trees, they suddenly started to blossom. Seeing this, the lord was very pleased and gave him much reward.
When the mean man knew this, he imitated and went to the lord. "I am the most wonderful old man who can make the cherry trees blossom. I can show you the most beautiful cherry blossoms on all of your withered cherry trees," said the mean man. He threw his ash, but nothing happened. What was worse, the ash entered the lord's eyes. The lord got very angry and put him into prison.

I think this story teach children, "If you are always kind, good things will surely happen." but I don't know the exactly meaning because Japanese fable story isn't written maxim.

  10. Hi Saleh , that's a great comment for us . human means in Arabic " ENSAN" and forgiveness means "NESIAN". As we know if a person couldn't forget,he/she wouldn't able to live !

so I hope all the teachers forgive our mistakes in the TOEFL test, and give us high grade . because we are humans ;)

Sort of poetry.Although I learned how to write the Haiku
In Arabic I could not write it in English to start with.
The story is full with lessons and homilies nonetheless
